The Meaning of Tonglen
January 8, 2026
Tonglen is a compassion practice for opening the heart in the presence of difficulty.
Tonglen means giving and taking. It is a meditation that trains the heart to stay open, even when suffering is present.
The practice traditionally works with the breath. On the in-breath, we imagine receiving pain, fear or confusion. On the out-breath, we offer relief, warmth and courage.
Compassion as courage
Tonglen is not about absorbing the world’s pain in a literal way. It is a way of reversing the habit of turning away. We practice meeting suffering with steadiness, then offering what is most needed.
This can begin very close to home. We might practice for our own anxious mind, for someone we love, or for a stranger whose difficulty we recognize.
The result is not sentimental. It is spacious, brave and deeply human.
